When it seems our journey is going the direction opposite of where it’s supposed to, it becomes all too easy to think that the work we’ve done has gone to waste. In an instant, business and life becomes a challenge and we become inclined to NOT want to pick up and do what needs to be done. It just seems as if progress is no where in sight.
Who’s with me on this? News flash: This is the perfect time to pick up speed and press forward. When times are cruel it’s understandable to feel as if all the goals we’ve written beforehand seems out of range. Or even worse non-existent.
Let’s stop to think about something for a minute. You’re hiking in the woods and suddenly get lost. How do you think you’ll feel then? Confused, frustrated, discouraged? Maybe lonely? We definitely wouldn’t be sure which path or direction to take next. And roasting marshmallows by the campfire wouldn’t exactly be the first thing that would cross our minds. There’s no doubt that we would see those dried up leaves first alongside hundreds of twirling vines. Then hear the scary wolves howling…loudly. In that point in time our world would become tiny.
How much do you wanna bet we wouldn’t even notice the colorful orchids, delicate lilacs and it’s intricate petals? Let alone the graceful clear rivers or the bright blue skies? This is a perfect example of what can happen when we have those tendencies to scrutinize every detail in our work and life.
For the majority of us, we’re conditioned to think about the end result and that it’s the big things that ultimately make the difference. Maybe we’re socially conditioned, I don’t know. But let’s simply reflect on the little traces of sequences we took and the baby steps we walked to get us to where we are today. Stop.Add it all up. How’d you do? Not bad, eh? That’s because those small measures are more than just small. They’re GREAT measures that add up and are what eventually led us to that end result!
So you see? Those tiny strides are equally as important, if not more important than fretting over the fact the we didn’t get there…yet. The problem is that we don’t immediately think to step back and look at the big picture. The big picture being all the work and effort done in its entirety thus far. Focusing on where we are TODAY and how much work we’ve done to get to that certain point. Seriously, it’s so easy to do the little things but few people actually take the time to DO it. Need some proof? Here you go: When was the last time…
In other words, let’s occupy our mind with thoughts such as “step-by-step we’re getting closer” instead of “we’ve still got so much to do I should’ve been finished by now!” A final word It’s definitely important to review our objectives more frequently than not during those rough times. Learn to be appreciative of how much has been accomplished. Then place one foot in front of the other and take those small steps needed to carry out the rest of your journey.
Most importantly, keep reminding yourself of how awesome it’ll feel once you arrive at your destination. And the next time you’re tempted to skip over the fact that it’s the little things that count, definitely remember to recognize that it reallyis the smallest things that add up and make a BIG difference. Now that I’ve given some things to empower you as you travel along your adventure I’d love to know your thoughts.

- a penny on the ground mattered?
- a piece of trash on the ground was picked up and placed where it belonged?
- a tiny piece of chocolate candy was gracefully rejected? (Remember… those health goals.)
- a courtesy call was made? (It takes 3 seconds to dial and less than 60 seconds to explain why we’re gonna be late for that appointment.)
- you read a story to or played a game with your child? (It takes up a fraction of your day.)
- you did something worthy for your body? (Our body is our temple.)
- you just smiled at a stranger? (The power of a simple smile.)
- you gave a compliment to someone having a bad day? (But only if you mean it.) (I’m sure there are more specific examples you can come up with )
